The following items of news about AESC members were published on the Club website at various times.  This page is an archive of those announcements and are retained here for your convenience and interest.

We note the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Terry Bergstrom on June 23rd.  He was elected to membership in the Club in 1980 and served as president  in 1991.  A highlight of meetings in recent years was his much-anticipated talk, "50 years ago at the AESC."  Terry was a guiding force on the AESC Foundation Board of Trustees.  READ MORE HERE  If you wish to make a memorial donation to the AESC Foundation, CLICK HERE.

3/17/2019 - We are deeply saddened to note the passing of our dear friend and longtime member, Bob Bellows, on March 15.  He was a Club member since 1984.  While he will be sorely missed, his legacy lives in in all of us.  Read Bob's obituary HERE. 

11/17/2018 -- AESC Member of 60 years, Bob Schimek, passed away earlier this month at his home in New Orleans.  Bob was a familiar face at Club meetings for many years, and we certainly are grateful for his friendship and wisdom!  CLICK HERE to read Bob's obituary.

11/10/2018 -- We received the terrible news that Arti Hurria, MD, wife of AESC member Tom Lee, was killed in a car accident on November 7th in Los Angeles. CLICK HERE to view information about Arti's life and accomplishments.

April 2018 -- We are deeply saddened by the news that our friend and mentor, B. Thomas Hutchinson, MD, has passed away.  Tom was a longtime member of the AESC (45 years), elected to membership in 1972.  VIEW Dr. Hutchinson's obituary published in the Boston Globe.

6/7/2016 -- Abbot G. Spaulding, MD, passed away at his home in Cincinnati on June 4th.  He was 82 years old.  Dr. Spaulding was elected to membership in 1971.  He last attended the AESC at it's 50th annual meeting.  Read more

7/8/2016 -- We have just learned that Walter Petersen, MD, passed away on April 4th in Seattle at the age of 87.  Walt was a Club member for more than 50 years.  He last attended the AESC annual meeting in 2009 at the Broadmoor.  Read more

3/5/2016 -- We are saddened to mark the passing of Jacqueline Acers on March 3, 2016, at the age of 85.  Jackie is the widow of longtime AESC member Tom Acres.  They are survived by seven children, including Club member Ann Acers Warn.  Jackie and Tom were always a source of delight at AESC meetings since Tom's induction as a member in 1971.  He last attended an annual meeting in 2005.  Read More  

November 13, 2015 -- We are shocked and saddened to report that our colleague and friend, Scott A. Pastor, died of cardio-pulmonary arrest on November 9th.  He was a longtime member of the AESC having been elected to membership in 1995.  All Club members extend their condolences to Scott's wife, Molly, their sons Tommy and Sam, and the entire family.  Read more here.  (Posted 11/13/2015)

September 4, 2014 -- Welcome New Members!  The AESC is proud to welcome five new members elected at the annual summer meeting in Vail, Colorado:  Jesse L. Berry, MD, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, CA; Curtis L. Hagedorn, MD, Colorado Retina Associates, Denver, CO; Glen G. Hoar, MD, North Island Eye Center, Comox, BC Canada; Shira L. Robbins, MD, UC San Diego, Ratner Children's Eye Center, La Jolla, CA; and Pamela E. Williams, MD, Pediatric Eye Care Center, Baton Rouge, LA.

August 6, 2013-- We were sorry to learn recently of the deaths of two longtime members.
     James C. Newton, MD, passed away on February 25, 2013 at the age of 83.  He was elected to membership in the AESC in 1967 and was a familiar face at many Club events over the years.  CLICK HERE to read Dr. Newton's obituary.
     Morton S. Cox Jr., MD, passed on April 21 of this year at the age of 79.  He joined the AESC in 1972 and was very active, not only in the Club, but also other ophthalmic/retina organizations.  CLICK HERE to read the obituary for Dr. Cox.
 

October 22, 2012 -- We are sad to report that Walter H. Benedict, MD, has passed away in Knoxville, TN, at the age of 90.  Walter was a Charter Member of the AESC, having joined in 1956.  On an interesting note, his father was the head of the eye department of the Mayo Clinic back in the 1920s.   CLICK HERE to read more.

May 29, 2012 -- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of longtime AESC member Brooks Poley on April 21 in McAllen, Texas, after a brief battle with cancer.  Brooks was elected to the Club in 1967 and has been an enthusiastic member ever since.  Who could forget his country and western dancing in the Red Barn during the 2008 annual meeting in Ojai, California!  To read the complete obituary, CLICK HERE.
 
May 14, 2012 --Tom Lee joined an elite group of influential members recognized with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor presented by National Ethical Coalition of Organizations (NECO). He was one of about 100 fellow honorees selected from thousands of nominations who received the award May 12 at the Great Hall on Ellis Island in New York City. He shares a commonality with past recipients including several past U.S. presidents, Muhammad Ali, Deepak Chopra, Yogi Berra, Rudy Giuliani, Nasser Kazeminy, Hillary Clinton, and Janet Reno, to name a few.  Read more...
