AESC Recreational Activities
63rd Annual Meeting - 2021


Welcome to the mountains of Virginia!

The great outdoors will be the focus of group activities planned for you and your family during the AESC's 63rd Annual Meeting at the Omni Homestead in Virginia.

Additional registration fees for the Club-sponsored events are necessary since there are extra costs associated.  Activities sponsored by the Club also include transportation (when necessary).

Recreation Events Details and Registration

Online registration for recreational activities is now available.  Details and costs for each of the planned recreational activities are listed below.  The online form will calculate the total amount due.  You may select the "pay later" option should you wish to pay with a check... otherwise, the form will charge the recreation fee to a credit card.  If you have any questions or special requests, please contact Kathy Paul at the AESC administrative office.

Monday, August 2

Spouse Book Club

9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Gather immediately after the Family Breakfast.  Get together with other Club spouses to renew old friendships and make new ones.  We'll be discussing “The Silent Patient” by  Alex Michaelides.

Younger Kids Outing

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.		 Corral Adventure -- For children under 4'6" in height.  Includes a hand-led ride in the corral, a carriage ride and a tour of the equestrian center.  Club organizers will pick up the kids at the family breakfast and accompany them to the Equestrian Center.
$32 per participant

Older Kids Outing

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

 Trail Ride -- For kids taller than 4'6".  Ride horseback through the wooded forest accompanied by guides.  We'll be using Western saddles for this outing.  Club organizers will pick up the kids at the family breakfast and accompany them to the Equestrian Center.
$86 per rider.

Afternoon Family Outing - - 
Cascade Gorge Hike 

Depart hotel at 1:30 p.m.

Don't miss one of the most popular activities at The Omni Homestead Resort.  On this tour, you'll be led and entertained by a naturalist through a series of beautiful waterfalls alonside a deep, Allegheny Mountain gorge trail.  Learn about regional and unusual flora and fauna in this semi-tropical environment, and the medicinal and edible properties of the many local plants. 

This is a 1.8 mile journey on relatively flat terrain (700 ft. in elevation change).  Intermediate hiking ability is necessary for this 3-hour excursion.  Bottled water will be provided.

$35 per person; $12 ages 5-12

NOTE:  If you register a 5-12 kid, the form will charge you the full amount.  When we see those registrations come through, we'll automatically process a partial refund for the difference.  This is due to technical issues... don't ask, but this is the easiest way to make the discount work!
Tuesday, August 3
AESC Tennis Tournament

2:00 - 5:00 p.m.		 The Club's annual round robin tennis tournament has become a popular outing on the courts.  This year, we'll be playing on the The Homestead's own "Har-Tru" tennis courts in the Allegheny Springs activity area at the resort. Balls and beverages (water and sports drinks) will be provided.  Rental rackets are available in the pro shop for $10 per hour.
$20 per player 
Wednesday, August 4

Tubing on the Jackson River

Depart the hotel at 1:30 p.m.
Expected return at about 5 p.m.

The Jackson River is a major tributary of the James River flowing a total of 96 miles.  River levels are dictated by releases from the Gathright Dam located 18.5 miles upstream at Lake Moomaw.  This activity is for individuals age six and older.  Each person will have their own tube.  Price includes transportation between the hotel and the river, safety equipment, tubes snack and beverages.
$150 per floater (no, this is not a retina joke!)
Thursday, August 5

AESC Golf Outing
The Old Course

Shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.

Tee off on the Old Course, home of the nation's oldest first tee in continuous use. The course, which debuted in 1892 as a 6-hole course, boasts updates by William S. Flynn and Donald Ross. Abundant fairway contouring gives most shots a side hill, uphill, or downhill lie to smallish greens, making approach shots interesting.
We'll start with a shotgun at 8 a.m.  Price includes greens fee, cart and state taxes.  Club rentals are available... contact Kathy Paul if you would like to reserve clubs in advance.
$120 per player 

"Not Golf" -- Falconry

9:30 a.m.

Falcon hunting has a long-standing reputation for being the sport of kings, and in the Virginia countryside, it still is!  Guests can participate in a field sports tradition that stretches back nearly 4,000 years.  Learn the fine points of the sport with trained birds of prey, including falcons, hawks and owls.  Our private one-hour demonstration will take place at the Homestead Resort's Mews, a world-class falconry facility.  
$60 per participant; no charge for kids 5 and under

Other Independent Things To Do at The Homestead on Your Own

There's plenty to do on your own at The Homestead Resort, both outdoors and inside...

  • Outdoor activities include bike riding, the shooting club, zip lines, fly fishing and, of course the pool.
  • Indoors, have some fun in the game room, learn about the extensive history of the resort
  • Check out the Homestead's "wellness" offerings including the spa, hot springs and swimming pools.
  • Explore the Hot Springs area attractions
