Mahajan, Vinit -- "Lumbus-Based Vitrectomy Using Trocar Cannulas."  We conducted a retrospective review of vitrectomy cases where limbus-based trocars cannulas were inserted into the anterior chamber in eyes with various anterior segment pathology and posterior segment indications.  These included: globe trauma, vitreous hemorrhage with retinal detachment, endophthalmitis, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, opacified vitreous secondary to uveitis, glaucoma requiring vitreous removal prior to shunt placement, persistent fetal vasculature, retained lens material, dislocated IOL, cataract extraction, pupillary membrane, and epiretinal membrane. The patient cohort included both adults and children who were aphakic, phakic or psuedophakic.  We found that small-guage vitrectomy trocar cannulas may be safely used in the antior chamber during vitrectomy.  The limbal approach for vitrectomy may be advantageous in complex cases where surgeons must avoid potential complications associated with pars plana incisions or preserve scleral and conjunctival integrity.
Educational Objective:  This lecture addresses an educational need for new surgical methodology.
     Schedule:  Anytime

Mahajan, Vinit -- "Next Generation Retinal Biopsy".  Tissue biopsy for protein biomakers is essential for early diagnosis of diseases and selection of therapy.  Retinal biopsies are not routinely performed due to the technical complexity and potential for iatrogenic damage.  My lab is using proteomic analytical methods to study to identify protein biomarkers in ocular tissues.  Our findings indicate: (1) The vitreous contains numerous intracellular proteins that originate from the retina; (2) Changes in vitreous protein composition precede clinical signs of retinal degeneration; and (3) needle biopsies of the vitreous are comparable to vitreous cutter biopsies.  Taken together, the vitreous has emerged as a rich source of retinal proteins.  we are developing strategies to measure retinal disease protein biomarkers through in-office vitreous biopsies.
Educational Objective:  This lecture will address an educational need to understand methods for detecting retinal disease biomarkers.
     Schedule:  Anytime
