Spouse Book Club

The Spouse Book Club will take place this year at the usual time on Wednesday morning after breakfast from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.  The hotel consierge will visit for the first 15 - 30 minutes to provide an overview of the hotel and Vail Village, as well as answering any questions you may have.

The book selection this year is:  "One Thousand White Women:  The Journals of May Dodd."  This  is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Information about the resort and Vail
Travel to High Altitudes

Vail's altitude is about 8,150 feet above sea level on average, and the summit is 11,570 feet above sea level.  Although we completely expect you to have a wonderful time in Vail, it pays to be aware of the effects high elevations can have on you.  Here are some resources and tips:
  • Bear in mind that the air is much dryer at higher altitudes.  It's a good idea to drink about twice as much water in Vail as you would at home in lower elevations.
  • With the thinner air and strong sun, plan to use sun screen when you are outdoors
  • Be aware of your alcohol intake, and eat foods high in potassium such as broccoli, bananas, avocado, cantaloupe, celery, greens, bran, chocolate (yes!), granola, dates, dried fruit, potatoes and tomatoes.
  • Pace yourself when engaging in physical activity.  Take it a little more slowly and take some time to catch your breath.
